While everyone at the (currently ongoing) New York Fashion Week is talking about Spring 2012 Ready to Wear, today we will touch on Chanel’s Fall 2011 Couture Collection.
Have you seen it? Or at least caught a glimpse of it? Well, if you haven’t here’s a peek:

Chanel Fall 2011 Couture Collection
As you can see, it’s all about the peplum silhouette for the brand’s Couture Collection this season. The luxurious label has fully embraced and incorporated the cut into almost every single outfit in the line-up. Granted we won’t be seeing these clothes on the racks (we hear Chanel only serves these dresses to a selected number of clientele), but we’re guessing a couple of celebs will probably be donning a piece or two. We’re also guessing it won’t take long for the copycats to create something similar – be it a skirt or a dress.
That said, we’d like to hear your thoughts on peplum skirts. Can you appreciate it? Or do you deem it unflattering? Better yet, would you wear a peplum skirt if you were given one?
It is certainly not a common type of silhouette. So far, we’ve only covered one celebrity (if you can count her as a celebrity) in a peplum skirt and that would be Pippa Middleton. However, we do think that if worn right, the peplum can actually look elegant and lend a different flavor to a classic attire.
Fit is essentially the most important thing when picking a peplum skirt or dress. Simply put, it has to fit you right. Of course, you also have to consider your body shape. Women with wide hips must generally stay away from the peplum. Last note to remember is that these days, the peplum can come in many styles, shapes, and sizes. As you can see, Chanel did the classic but oversized, but other kinds of peplum do exist, from ruffled to asymmetric.
Allow us to give you a few examples from sQ The Label, Alexander Wang, Preen, and VPL – all of which can be found at Shopbop:

sQ The Label Angel Living Skirt, USD79.20 from USD264 / Alexander Wang Dropped Peplum Skirt, USD495 / Preen Carter Skirt, USD1540 / VPL Plication Skirt, USD295
So now back to that question. What are your thoughts on peplum skirts? Can you appreciate it? Would you wear it? We would love to hear your comments.
