Trend Spotting: The Skirt and Top Combo

A spring trend worth looking into is the skirt and top combo – an outfit that looks like a dress but is actually made up of two pieces, a matching top and skirt. It’s funny if you think about it because last year, designers were so into the opposite of this – the combo dress, a dress that looks like it is made up of two garments because the top and the bottom don’t match.

I guess you could say the advantage to this new trend is that the outfit becomes more versatile since mixing and matching becomes an option, something that was absent in the previous trend. This also makes purchasing a skirt and top combo more valid or reasonable since it’s like buying two pieces of clothing for the price of one. We get the feeling this trend will catch on fast. Already leading the celebrity pack is Kate Bosworth with her two-piece Dolce & Gabbana, which we featured the other day.

So what do you think? Would you embrace this trend for spring? You know what? I don’t see the reason why you shouldn’t. Like I said, the option to mix and match makes this trend more attractive. You can wear them together, wear the top with different bottoms, or wear the skirt with different tops.

If you would love to give this one a try, you can start with this skirt and top combo from Nanette Lepore. It’s like a maxi dress if you wear it together, but you can also remove the top and just pair the skirt with a white tee to achieve a more casual look. The top can also go with shorts or jeans, it’s really up to you. It’s available at Shopbop in case you decide to give it a go.
